Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.
Leonardo da Vinci
Welcome to my art studio! Everything you see here comes from my own art and designs. All of my work is hand painted and sketched - no digital. Like many artists that I admire, I believe that details are unnecessary, can be confusing, and are too much information to give - especially in this technology driven world. I believe that the eye should be able to rest when looking at art. And finally, I believe that through simplification of my work, I'm able to achieve a more personal statement - rather than just a photograph or an exact representation. By working to simplify, or abstract, my imagery, I'm continually striving to evoke more emotion, delicacy, and texture to my work. You can also see where this belief may be applied to the decoration of interiors - compare the difference between a room designed by Darryl Carter vs. a room designed by Sister Parish. It's in the simplification of form, the erasing of detail, that art becomes a personal and unique communication. There's nothing logical about art- there is no correct answer. The answer lies in celebrating that art has one single, unique viewpoint in the world. By simplifying my imagery, I offer beauty, color, and sometimes even a touch of whimsy to my scenes.
I've been painting my whole life and hold degrees in studio art and interior design. I started showing my paintings locally in juried shows, then began selling my work online. I do get really excited about decor, furniture, and interiors, and found that my passion was working in two dimensions as a painter. Working on canvas or paper is a process for me- it's never about the finished product. When I start a painting I have a basic idea of what I want, but the beauty to me, is in the process of putting it all together to my satisfaction. And it often ends up different than the original idea- the painting can have a mind of its own!
I spend quite a bit of time at our beach house, continually inspired by the sea and surrounds, and you'll find that reflected throughout my work. I accept studio visits by appointment - please use the contact page for inquiries. Thank you for stopping by!
